The Mauritius Scops Owl is only known from skeletal remains and some descriptions surviving from early texts. A notable feature of this owl is the unfeathered lower leg or tarsi.
Reports of owls in the forest well into the 19th Century lead us to the assumption that extinction is relatively recent.
